Today, Kweichow Moutai’s headquarters issued a notice to its 42 self-operated stores nationwide, effective immediately, that 500ml Feitian Moutai is to be sold at RMB 1,753 per bottle and is now open to individual consumers. The news has drawn considerable attention from consumers.
The question arises: is there stock available? Can it be purchased now?
This afternoon (August 8), readers in the C Four official WeChat groups have been sharing updates, reporting that some provincial self-operated stores already have stock available, though some have purchase limits in place. Among them, the Kweichow Moutai self-operated store in Wuhan confirmed over the phone that stock is available, though quantities are limited – “Individuals are limited to one case, while companies are limited to five cases.” Staff members specifically noted that only personal invoices can be issued. As for payment methods, they recommended “Alipay or bank card, as WeChat has payment limits.” “The staff were warm and welcoming – it was a great experience,” said one Moutai enthusiast who called the Wuhan store.
Another enthusiast who contacted the Sanya self-operated store was told that each person is limited to one case of original boxed product, with only personal invoices available. However, the Haikou store, also in Hainan Province, stated that they “currently have no stock.”
Among the municipalities directly under the central government, a staff member at the Chongqing self-operated store responded to an inquiry by saying, “No stock today.” However, upon further questioning, the staff member added, “There might be stock on Monday – give us a call then.” The Ningbo store said, “No stock – perhaps not until next month.” The Guangzhou store also said, “No stock.”
Why do some stores have stock while others do not? Industry insiders suggest that since the price adjustment notice and the policy opening to consumers came rather suddenly, “it takes time to restock.” Some stores that have stock may be drawing from earlier inventory.
Based on messages from the WeChat reader group, there is considerable enthusiasm surrounding this price adjustment and the opening to individual consumers. As we noted in a previous article, this is the “last bullet” fired by Moutai headquarters – the final “bullet” to break through Moutai’s dual-track pricing system, and the final “bullet” to shatter the middlemen’s profit chain.
So, what are your thoughts on this price adjustment and the new policy?
